A clear vision for the environment

Sony lenses are renowned for their performance – letting you confidently capture any moment. But it is innovation reflecting our environmental concern that makes them truly unique.

Sony environmental concern and resource conservation

As well as making fine products, Sony continues to work toward achieving zero environmental impact across its products and business activities, in line with our "Road to Zero" plan. In addition to the countless user benefits of lighter and easier-to-use products, our ceaseless innovation supports our company-wide commitment to minimise our energy and raw material consumption and, especially, waste.

Function, beauty and environmental concern.

The FE600mm F4 GM OSS achieves more than 10% overall weight reduction compared with the 500mm F4 G SSM.

Revising the barrel components

Revision of the structure and optimisation of the shape of the barrel have achieved a design that minimises the use of resources, contributing to our “Road to Zero” plan. We are also pursuing further reductions in raw material usage.

Reducing use of virgin plastic

The use of virgin (unrecycled) plastic has been reduced by approximately 34% relative to previous interchangeable lenses.

A highly efficient lens structure

A significant reduction in weight has been achieved, without loss in quality, thanks to the unprecedented precision of Sony’s unique XA (extreme aspherical) elements, and the use of lightweight fluorite in place of optical glass.

After going to many shoot locations in the process of development, I’m pursuing high depiction performance, ease of framing to follow the subject, and reduction of weight for portability, in order to capture the single instant of greatest impression from the motions of subjects far from the photographer.

As well as a new optical design and weight reduction achieved by the adoption of a light magnesium alloy, at the same time we’ve addressed environmental concerns through reductions in resource consumption including in lens elements and virgin plastic.

Leading-edge Sony technology is also connected to our concern for the environment, and as an engineer I’d like to tell people that those powerful creative works that photographers send out across the world carry with them our environmental concern through our interchangeable-lens designs.

Sustainability sounds great

Under our Road to Zero and Green Management 2025, Sony is targeting a 10% reduction in the amount of virgin plastic used per product (excluding packaging) compared to FY2018. For over 10 years in audio, we have been improving the performance of recycled materials and using them in our designs.
